Can I conduct a choice experiment in surveyengine where the response variable is NOT discrete but continuous. Instead of choosing 1 alternative, the respondent would be specifying what percentage of each alternative he will choose (all the percentages will add up to 100). The screenshot illustrates such an experiment.
Yes this is possible and there are a couple of ways to do this but they require some custom coding.
The trick is to use some templating to preserve the nice layout and javascript to extract data from the four fields into the dependent variable. Likely comma separated for later extraction from the data.
I‘d also suggest some good UX to ensure constant sum is honoured through dynamic recalculation.
The Surveyengine tech team could do this if the coding skills in house are limited
In the case you have multiple dependent variables you may wish to force ranking so that no two answers are the same.
-
Such as in the case of Best-Worst
Which is worst?
Which is best? -
Alternately something more elaborate where you don’t want ranking such as
Which would you choose?
Which would your partner choose? -
or
Which do you prefer?
Which would you pay $XXX for?
